Benchmarking a good puer tea.
Recently, I have met up with a local tea connoisseur to discuss how to benchmark a good puer tea.
For this forum discussion sake, I will try to list down a few points that the connoisseur had highlighted. You may agree or disagree, but please comment as I am trying to understand if the tea connoisseur are giving me the correct facts .

1) Comfort- a good tea should give a comfortable feeling when you drink it . The least comfortable feeling indicates the tea will have a heavy tanine acid content.

2) The Body of the tea - A good tea will have a full body feeling when the tea is consume. There is a saying that the body of the tea depends on the location of the tea is planted. The higher the altitude the more body the should have . this character could be explain by comparing a soup that was boiled for an hour compare to a soup that was boiled for 8hours.

3)Thickness of the liquor - the thickness of the tea will mark the age of the tea tree. The older the tree the thicker of the tea liquor.

4) Lasting of the tea aroma and the sweetness of the tea.- a high grade tea will be able to have a longer lasting effect .the lower grade will have not much lasting power.there are instances that a good tea could last for an overnight after the consumption.

5) Smoothness of the tea- a good tea should be able to give a smooth feeling when drinking . a "rough" tea will give the throat a "dry" feeling.

6) Lightness of the tea. the higher quality the lighter the tea will be . There are cases that when a tea liquor will be like tasteless initially when being drank. However the aroma of the tea will then comes back from within .
According to the connoisseur only a handful tea in the market will have this revolving effect . (Personally I have tried a tea like this which is the 70s yellow label).

7) Purity - a good tea should not have much impurities taste. A single bud with two leafs should be preferred for a high quality tea.
The purest form a highest quality tea should be from a single hill and and its should be within an attitude of the hill. There is also another way of looking into this character. The more livelier the tea the lighter tea will be . an example is that all cook tea is dead and heavy.

8) The release the aroma of the tea. A good tea will able to elope the whole mouth and the throat with its aroma. It is also one way to compare tea quality . For an example if you drink one tea after another, the better tea will dominates your taste and aroma in the mouth. You will starts to rejects the tea that is inferior.

Please add in comments to prove the theories given by this friend of mine are correct . Thanks.

I have been drinking Puer for more ten years and all these years of drinking these teas. I have found out that some of the Puer tea do have some medical properties.
Below are some medical properties beliefs that I had comes across for your comments and verification.

1. Raw and Cook Puer are belief to able to reduce cholesterol level . One who need to consume at least for two weeks to get some result.

2. Cook puer are belief to relieve flu and able to disintegrated phlegm .( one of my puer drinking buddy swore that this works )

3. Raw Puer is belief to reduce hyper tension .

4. Raw and Cook Puer are able to reduce the fats in the liver.( This is one personal experience, My liver condition had got better each year without any medication.)

5. Raw Purple leaf type Puer are able to reduce glucose level in the blood stream.( Had personally tried this and it does works . My glucose level will drop at least a point after consuming the purple leaf puer tea. One need to at least drinking 8 to 10 large teacups to be effective.)

6. Raw and cook are able reduce waistline as all tea are able disintegrated/wash away fats in the body.

7. The antioxidant in all Puer tea are able to reduce the development of certain cancer cells in the body.

8. The antioxidant in Puer tea are able to liquefied /thinning the density of the blood. (Most sickness is due to the blood thickening in one body , as thick blood are slow to flow in the body system.

9. All tea are able detoxified / clean the body system especially the kidneys and liver.

10. Reactivate the brain cells ( to counter Alzheimer disease) . This could be explain by some people who can't sleep after the drinking tea.

Above are only my own beliefs. therefore I would greatly appreciate if any one could confirm if my beliefs are true or just folklore.

Puer tea price finally made some adjustment in Malaysia

Last year I had made some comments that when will the price of the puer bust. It seems that my question was answered when I recently went to the Malaysia Tea Expo in Times Square. I had also found two suprises in the expo.First suprise..Most of the prices for the FY 08 sheng tea had significantly dropped from 40% to 70%. Commanding brands like Menghai and Xia Guan was not spared as well.Managed to buy some Yr08 Menghai 8582 Sheng Cake costed at about USD 6.00 per pc.(last year with same type of tea would have easily costed me USD 10.00.) There is also a counter that even sells Qiao Mu tea cakes for a USD 3.50 per pc. which personally I believe the quality are better than the ones produced last year with on par price or a fold more expensive. Overall, i would say the price of the puer tea are back to normal and the price of the tea is back to price range of yr 03 /04.
This time around in the Expo I could see a more subdue atmosphere compare to the previous expo in The MInes and most of tea the price are more "realistic" and the quality of yr 08 tea is significantly better than the ones in yr 06 and especially yr 07 teas. However, Aged Sheng tea was not much affected by the price drop. (the price of a 1996 sheng Xia Guan Toh Cha cost about USD$60.00 per pc) and infact I could see some price increase of some aged sheng cake like the 80s Kwang Tong Koong Peng is now selling at USD$500.00.Most of the 90s sheng tea are selling at price range of USD $70.00 to $100.00.I would say if anyone who are keen to buy some tea for own consumption or collection, I think this is right time purchase some worthwhile tea with reasonable prices.Second supriseThe shu puer had finally comes to age. It is more expensive than the sheng ones .This is very normal as the shu puer needs more manpower to process the tea compare to the sheng ones .However, last year shu puer price was all time low, but this year shu puer price rebounded twice compare with the price as per last year.Luckily I had only bought shu puer last year without any regret now as I always feels that Shu puer will make thier mark one day.Kindly comment if the same scenario is the same outside Malaysia.Thanks.
